We will be focusing on Problem Solving Strategies that will help us understand and solve word problems in Math. Below are the strategies we will learn so that we will always have a “toolkit” of strategies for any math problem we encounter!
*Remember* – These Strategies can be used at school and at home!
Draw a Picture/ Diagram/ Act it Out
Draw a picture or diagram to help solve a problem. Simply act out the problem.
Number Sentence
Make a number sentence to solve the problem.
Guess and Check
Guess an answer to a problem and then check and see if you are correct. If it is not correct, try again.
Use Easier Numbers
Rewrite the problem using easier numbers instead of the numbers that are there. Know how to do the problem first, then try it with the larger numbers.
Use a Table/ Chart/ Graph
Making tables can help organize data or information, spot patterns, and identify missing information.
Organized List
Use to put items in a given order. May be used to help find all possible combinations of given items.
Working Backwards
Make a series of computations, starting with data given at the end of the problem and ending with data presented at the beginning of the problem.
Logical Reasoning
One way to do this would be to make a table or grid to organize or classify information. This would help to combine and organize facts so that a solution can be found.
